As a Mechanical Engineer at Switch, you will design and support mechanical systems for large-scale data centers. You will own design work from concept through construction and ensure systems meet performance, cost, and code requirements. You will work with internal teams and external partners to deliver consistent, buildable designs across sites. This role focuses on execution, design quality, and coordination across multiple active projects.
Design mechanical and piping systems for hyperscale data center projects
Review and guide work from external engineering consultants
Develop and maintain design standards, specifications, and basis of design documents
Select and evaluate mechanical equipment with vendors and manufacturers
Ensure designs meet mechanical and plumbing codes, standards, and utility requirements
Coordinate with internal teams, utilities, AHJs, and construction partners
Support projects through design reviews, permitting, and construction phases
Conduct site visits for assessments, design validation, and construction support
Identify improvements to cost, quality, schedule, and design consistency across projects
Communicates clearly and shares information needed for decisions
Takes ownership of work and follows through on commitments
Applies sound judgment when balancing performance, cost, and schedule
Works effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners
Identifies issues early and brings practical solutions
Maintains consistency and attention to detail across multiple projects
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field
4–7 years of experience designing mechanical systems for large-scale facilities
Experience with cooling systems and mechanical infrastructure in data centers or similar environments
Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing codes and standards
Experience coordinating with external design consultants
Familiarity with tools such as Bluebeam, Excel, Smartsheet, MS Office, or similar
Ability to review technical designs and support construction execution
Preferred:
Professional Engineer (PE) license
Experience with CFD or FEA tools for airflow and system analysis
Experience working with AHJs, utilities, and permitting processes
