Energy Management Systems Technician

Department: Construction
Location: Las Vegas, NV

General Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of this position is to support the installation and commissioning of power monitoring devices in relation to the upkeep and maintenance of electrical power monitoring systems.  This individual will work to find creative ways to keep operational costs to a minimum and work outside of the box with team members to improve efficiency. This person will work with Data Center Operations, App-Dev, Networking, Orders, Sales, Accounting and Construction teams as needed.   

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of load balancing activities
  • Audit of electrical engineering drawings
  • Develop and implement new ideas and solutions to ensure operational efficiency to include operating procedures, training documents, and EPMS graphics/tools
  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of the electrical power monitoring systems and databases (LDC, PME, DCE, etc.)
  • Installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the power monitoring devices
  • Provide remote support to external sites as needed
  • Travel and assist with planning and oversight of EPMS deployments at Switch site expansions
  • Assist with project managing special projects and installations from start to finish
  • Assist with development and integration of EPMS and BMS systems with Environmental Controls team

 

Other Duties:

  • Provide assistance to customers when assigned
  • Participate in policy and procedure development and maintenance
  • Compliance with policies and procedures
  • Upkeep of work order documentation and utilization reports
  • Communication and coordination of duties with external teams to complete projects or tasks

 

Required Job Skills:

  • Must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively with contractors performing maintenance or upgrade work on systems installed in the data center environment
  • Ability to analyze and make suggestions for problem resolution
  • Ability to solve problems with good initiative and sound judgment
  • Make decisions independently with minimal guidance
  • Have an understanding of electrical systems in a data center environment including transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, DC power systems, ATS/STS units, PDU units, air handling units, cooling towers, and fire suppression systems
  • Have strong background in mechanical, electrical or computer science theory
  • Have an understanding of safety requirements required while operating a multi-megawatt facility
  • Experience interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, and electrical drawings
  • Have an understanding of communication protocols (Modbus, SNMP, etc.)

 

Computer Equipment and Software:

  • Microsoft Suite: Must have MS Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Outlook skills

 

Education and Experience:

Certification:        Any certifications relevant to job field

Education:           College degree in electrical or electronics engineering preferred, but equivalent education or training may be considered

Experience:         Minimum 4 years’ experience troubleshooting electrical and/or communications equipment

 

Physical Demands

Local, domestic, and international travel may be required at Switch’s request.

The data center is a 24 hour/7 day operation. This position requires the ability to work effectively under pressure and multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously. This person may be required to work extended hours during peak work periods. Team members will be required to communicate and relay information effectively. Work will primarily be in an office setting.

The employee must be able to climb ladders, bend and frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
