Controls Engineer I

Department: Construction
Location: Las Vegas, NV

General Purpose of the Position:

The primary responsibility will be the deployment and maintenance of the building monitoring and controls system employed at Switch data centers. This member of the Environmental Controls team will work to find creative ways to keep operational costs to a minimum and will work outside of the box with team members to improve efficiency. The Controls Engineer will work with the Controls Director/Manager to develop and maintain a Controls team to support Switch executive, operation and construction teams when needed. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing sequences of operation and programming to ensure optimal and reliable system operation
  • Install control applications and QA for Switch building management systems
  • Maintain databases, devices, graphics, trends and support infrastructure as needed for Switch BMS
  • Oversight and execution of assigned projects
  • Assist in developing and conducting technical training programs
  • Assist in installation of devices pertaining to building operation and controls
  • Create and maintain As-Built wiring diagrams
  • Work with Maintenance team to improve system functionality and operational understanding
  • Attend training, seminars and factory acceptance testing

 

Other Duties:

  • Assist in developing special projects and solutions for new obstacles found within the data center
  • Work with Energy Management Systems team to develop and integrate power and controls data

 

Required Job Skills:

  • Must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and effectively with contractors and team members performing maintenance or upgrade work on systems installed in the data center environment; the ability to analyze and make suggestions for problem resolution; the ability to solve problems with good initiative and sound judgment and make decisions independently with minimal guidance
  • Have a good understanding of electrical and mechanical systems employed in a data center environment including, transformers, air handling units, cooling towers, pumping and cooling systems
  • Have strong background in HVAC Control Systems and Mechanical operation
  • Have a good understanding of safety requirements required while operating a multi-megawatt facility
  • Must have excellent writing, presentation and customer service skills
  • Must be well versed in reading blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics

 

Computer Equipment and Software:

  • Must have experience and ability in common business applications (i.e., Microsoft Suite: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Skills

 

Education and Experience:

Experience:        Minimum 4 years installing and maintaining building management architectures for HVAC and/or Power, of which 2 years has been worked in a supervisory capacity

 

Physical Demands

The data center is 24 hour/7 day operation.  This person must be able to respond to emergency situations at any time of day or night.  This position requires the ability to work effectively under pressure and multi-task and supervise multiple projects simultaneously. This person may be required to work extended hours during peak work periods and must be able to read and understand various color codes on components, wiring and equipment. Work will be near live electrical and mechanical gear.
