The Role: Senior Substation Engineer

As a Senior Substation Engineer at Switch, you will support the design and delivery of high and medium voltage infrastructure for hyperscale data centers. This role focuses on substation and utility interconnection projects that support reliable, scalable power delivery across Switch campuses. You will work with utilities, consultants, vendors, and internal teams to develop practical engineering solutions that meet performance, safety, and schedule requirements. This role requires strong technical judgment, clear communication, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects at the same time. Travel up to 25% is required.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and delivery of HV/MV substation projects supporting hyperscale data centers
  • Manage multiple substation and utility interconnection projects from design through construction support
  • Coordinate with utilities, consultants, vendors, and internal teams to align project requirements and schedules
  • Develop and maintain HV/MV Basis of Design documents, specifications, and engineering standards
  • Review electrical and structural engineering designs for technical accuracy and compliance
  • Evaluate protection and control system designs for performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Prepare and review RFPs for engineering consultants and equipment vendors
  • Review engineering calculations, studies, and design alternatives to support project decisions
  • Participate in site visits, construction reviews, and coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction
  • Identify opportunities to improve quality, consistency, cost, and delivery across substation projects
  • Support cross-functional teams during design, construction, testing, and turnover activities

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 4–7 years of experience in electrical power or utility engineering
  • Experience designing HV/MV substations and utility interconnection infrastructure
  • Understanding of protection and control systems for medium and high voltage applications
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, ANSI, UL, and utility design standards
  • Experience working with utilities, AHJs, engineering consultants, and construction teams
  • Ability to manage complex technical projects with moderate supervision
  • Proficiency with engineering and project tools such as ETAP, SKM, Bluebeam, Excel, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Office
  • Experience supporting mission-critical, industrial, utility, or large-scale infrastructure projects preferred
