The Role: Systems Architect – Infrastructure SecuritySystems Architect – Infrastructure Platforms (VMware + Kubernetes)

As a Systems Architect – Infrastructure Platforms, you are responsible for designing and evolving Switch’s core infrastructure platforms with a focus on scalability, reliability, and security-by-design.

This is not a pure security role. You are a systems thinker first, with deep expertise in VMware-based virtualization and modern container platforms (Kubernetes). You architect how systems are built, integrated, and operated—ensuring they are resilient, performant, and secure.

You will define platform architecture across virtualization, containers, networking, and hybrid environments, while embedding security principles into the foundation of those systems.

What You'll Do

• Design and define enterprise infrastructure architectures across virtualization, Kubernetes, networking, and operating systems
• Lead architecture for VMware platforms (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, NSX, VCF), including cluster design, scalability, and lifecycle management
• Architect and standardize Kubernetes platforms (multi-cluster design, orchestration, and operations), ideally with tools like Rancher or similar
• Establish reference architectures and design patterns for infrastructure platforms across on-prem and hybrid environments
• Ensure systems are designed with security, resilience, and operability in mind (not bolted on after the fact)
• Define identity, access, and segmentation models as part of overall system design
• Partner with networking teams on integrated designs involving routing, firewalls, DNS, and load balancing
• Guide implementation of observability, logging, and monitoring across platforms
• Participate in architecture reviews and provide guidance on system design tradeoffs and risks
• Act as a senior technical leader across infrastructure domains, helping teams make sound architectural decisions
• Contribute to long-term platform strategy and modernization efforts

What We’re Looking For

• You are a systems architect, not a policy-driven security specialist
• You naturally think in terms of platform design, dependencies, and scale
• You bring a security-first mindset, but your core strength is building and integrating systems
• You are comfortable going deep technically and challenging design decisions
• You can translate complex architecture into clear guidance for engineering and leadership
• You collaborate well across infrastructure, platform, and operations teams

What You’ll Bring

Required:

• 10+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, systems architecture, or platform engineering
• Strong, hands-on experience with VMware platforms (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, NSX, VCF)
• Experience designing and operating Kubernetes environments in production
• Deep understanding of infrastructure architecture across compute, storage, networking, and OS layers
• Experience designing highly available, scalable systems in enterprise environments
• Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (segmentation, routing, firewalls, DNS, load balancing)
• Familiarity with identity and access models across enterprise systems
• Experience participating in or leading architecture design reviews

Preferred:

• Experience with Rancher or multi-cluster Kubernetes management platforms
• Experience in hybrid or multi-cloud environments
• Familiarity with infrastructure security best practices (e.g., CIS benchmarks, hardening) as part of system design
• Relevant certifications (VMware, Kubernetes, or architecture frameworks)
